Escape and unescape HTML
Turn < into < and back — for when you're pasting code into a page and it keeps becoming markup.
- 1Paste the content
Code samples, email templates, anything that keeps getting interpreted.
- 2Escape or unescape
Escape turns angle brackets and ampersands into named, decimal or hex entities; unescape reverses all three.
- 3Copy the result
Paste safe now.
Questions people actually ask
What gets escaped?
The five that matter in HTML: & < > " '. Everything else is left readable for humans.
Unescape named or numeric entities?
All three — &, & and & decode equally happily.
Will it escape an & that is already an entity?
No. The double-escape guard is on by default, so existing entities are left alone. Turn it off when you deliberately want to show the entity text itself.
Why choose hex over decimal?
Both work in HTML and XML. Hex is common in older XML tooling and some CMS sanitizers; named entities are the easiest to read in source.
